Ezra Brooks Black Label Kentucky Straight Bourbon

Introduction

What some would call the 'standard' bourbon from the Ezra Brooks range, this Kentucky straight bourbon was first produced back in the 1950s to compete with the infamous Jack Daniels. These days it's produced by Lux Row Distillers in Kentucky and is mostly known for its great value for money as a tasty mixer for cocktails.

On the Nose

Buttered popcorn hits first, with some sweet vanilla, honey, and very mild notes of spiced orange peel. A nice nose, but not overly complex.

On the Palate

The vanilla still comes through, with oak wood being quite dominant, along with dark chocolate. The finish is lingering and spicy, with a dry almost nutty mouthfeel.

Conclusion

Not only did I try this bourbon neat, which I did enjoy (albeit it wasn't as complex as I'd hoped)... I also made an Old Fashioned to try it out as a mixer. I have to say, it was delicious! Being mixed with some simple syrup, bitters, and a nice big chunk of ice, this bourbon still held its own and made the flavours of the cocktail shine. I'd highly recommend you try it!
