Green Spot Chateau Montelena
This Green Spot whisky is triple-distilled in traditional pot stills, thereafter being matured in bourbon and sherry casks, before being finished for a final 12 months in wine casks, namely Zinfandel wine from Chateau Montelena in Napa Valley, California. Bottled at 40%, this could be an interesting one!
On the Nose
Tangy and vibrant notes of fresh summer berries, mixed with pineapple chunks in syrup, with sweet apple, all nicely balanced by an underlying heat of cedarwood. Slight citrus, and ever slighter yet marzipan.
On the palate
Brown sugar and very creamy vanilla, mixed with a few touches of fried doughnuts. Cinnamon spice and white pepper take over on the finish, making it quite a tangy and spicy ending.
I enjoyed this whisky on the nose a lot more than I did the taste. It was super spicy to me and left a burning sensation on the back of my throat. The finish actually lingers, and I had a very dry mouthfeel, like if you'd chewed on a few apple skins and was left with that kind of powdery dry feeling. Not unpleasant, just not my favourite finish ever.
All in all, I'm glad I tried it, but it's not a whisky I'd rush back to out of personal preference.
