Lagavulin 16 Years Old

Introduction

Founded over 200 years ago, this iconic whisky from the Lagavulin distillery on the Isle of Islay is a firm favorite of peat loving whisky drinkers. The deep smoky notes from the peat dried barley are left to mature in oak barrels for at least 16 years.

While it’s a bestselling bottle, it is not for the faint of heart. It is adored by those who have acquired a taste for it, and if you are one of them, you'll know what I'm talking about!

On the Nose

Peat.. but for me it wasn't as intense or harsh at all (like a Laphroaig, for example) but more like a bonfire from a distance. Complex undertones of toffee caramel, and very subtle red berries. I was reminded partly of some seaweed on the beach. Once settled, some sherry notes come through on the high end of the nose.

On the palate

Dry peat smoke (more in the taste than the nose), with slightly salty notes on the tongue. For a 43% ABV whisky, it packs a powerful punch and leaves behind mouth filling spice!

I was reminded of smoked ham, with the oak vanilla coming through as it settled in the glass for a short time.

Lots of flavour... and a whisky which gives more intricate notes the more you become accustomed to it.

With water?

I preferred this whisky neat, for me the addition of water removed the complexity which I enjoy.

Conclusion

A classic, fantastic peated whisky. One I save for special occasions. If you haven't tried Lagavulin, you really must! It's a fantastic dram and worth every penny.

Would I buy again?

Absolutely! Having a Lagavulin 16 Years Old in the collection at all times is a necessity!
