Whistlepig 10 Year Old Rye Whiskey

Introduction

Whistlepig is an American / Canadian hybrid brand of Rye whisky, founded with the purchase of a 150-year-old barn, turned into a distillery after five years of purchase. But initially, its whiskey wasn't homegrown. WhistlePig originally purchased a stock of 10-year-old blendable whiskey from a Canadian distillery to kick off the business.

But, realising there was a market for their product, the distillery as it is today was opened (in 2015), and Whistlepig now distills 7 days a week in their copper pot still.

On the Nose

Mint and marzipan are strong on the nose, with some underlying orange zest.

On the palate

Grassy...herbaceous (but I couldn't pick out any specific herbs, just the grass note. I tried to find the mind I had detected on the nose, but couldn't get it).

Caramel Biscoff biscuits, and a really pleasing cherry undertone.

The mix of the more herbaceous and sweet biscuit taste was unusually but not unpleasant.

With water?

Interestingly, a couple of drops of water really settled the bitterness, and brought out the sweet caramel notes.

Conclusion

A decent Rye Whisky, not unpleasant at all, but (and this is just a personal preference), it wasn't something I'd chose to drink. If you enjoy Rye, I'm sure you'll love it!

Would I buy again?

Not for me...
