Roe and Co Blended Irish Whiskey
The booming Irish whiskey scene has enticed Diageo to return to the category, with this Irish blend of malt and grain whiskeys, Roe & Co!
Launched in 2017, this whisky is solely matured in ex-bourbon casks (a high proportion of which are first-fill, meaning that this is the first time it's been used to mature another whiskey), so there's plenty of creamy, honeyed bourbon influence to be enjoyed. Roe & Co is powered by an awesome all-female team, with head distiller Lora Herny and master blender Caroline Martin leading the line-up.
Martin boasts nearly 40 years of experience under her belt, and over the course of two years she trialled over 100 prototype blends until finally landing on this winning recipe! Now, how do I get a job tasting 100 blends? Sign me up!
On the Nose
Vanilla, shortbread, very sweet-smelling honey, maybe with some very subtle ginger white pepper. Fresh cut green apple and some buttercream icing.
On the palate
Wood shavings, fresh-cut green apples from the nose really come through, very smooth texture, with a chilli mouth feel finish... or in other words, spicy!
The dryness from what would be for me the skin of the green apple is the lasting finish for me.
Surprisingly (for a relatively cheap and cheerful Irish blended whiskey), this definitely packs a punch on the palate with plenty of notes to keep you interested, and going back for more! I tried this in a Pour and Sip tasting pack, and immediately make sure I owned a full-sized bottle. That’s how much I enjoyed it.
